16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

In 2022, only 14 per cent of all women and girls were living in countries with robust legal protection to guarantee women’s fundamental human rights.

Even when laws exist, this does not guarantee that they are compliant with international standards and recommendations, or are actively implemented and enforced. While countries are increasingly enacting legislation against domestic violence it is vital that they are enforced too, and that everyone is aware of the laws, rights and protections in place.

In Trinidad and Tobago, Irene Hinds, ACWW Area President for the Caribbean, Central & South America, shares a recent event that took place that centred on giving women an opportunity to seek advice and information directly from attorneys on gender-based violence.

“The Caroni District of the Trinidad and Tobago Federation of Women’s Institutes hosted a seminar aimed at raising the awareness of Gender Based Violence. The event began with [a drama that] illustrated the effects of Gender-based Violence. Following [the drama], two Attorneys who specialized in addressing Gender-based Violence led the seminar, providing insights into the legal frameworks and protections available to victims in Trinidad and Tobago.

This was followed by a question-and-answer session, where attendees had the opportunity to engage directly with the experts, seek advice and discuss strategies for combating Gender-based Violence.

The event educated and empowered participants to take action and advocate in their local communities.”

It is vital that robust legislation is put in place and properly enforced globally, and that all women have access to information on their rights, protection and legal frameworks in place in their area.
